Three little words.

I love you.

Just three words. Three syllables. But they convey so much. Or are used to convey so much. Or are used far too often to hold any meaning anymore. It all depends on your perspective.

Personally, I think "I love you" is so over-used that it doesn't really hold its original meaning. I personally think that saying "I love you" is a lot easier these days than saying "I trust you." But that's just my personal opinion. I don't really believe in romantic love, and considering the terrible crap on the news, it's starting to get harder to believe in family love or friend love either. But I've not quite given up on those yet.

As a result, "I love you" doesn't appear often in my stories. I usually try my best to avoid that phrase and write something else. Anything to avoid the commonness of "I love you."

So my question is, as a reader, how important is "I love you" in a story. Is it a deal-breaker if it's not there? Must your characters be in love before you'll accept sexual relations between them? Do you read a whole fic waiting anxiously for the first break of "I love you"? Or do you hope to never those three words in another romance again? Is the romance believable without someone saying "I love you?" Do you think a story can end happily without the two lovers admitting that they are in love?

Any comments to this particular discussion thread will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win a copy to any one of my three published stories: The Requiem of Janus, Monster, and The Finer Points of Thievery.

I look forward to your answers!
