Jaiden sighed, rubbing fingers across his aching forehead. “You're being stubborn, Ethan,” he muttered.
Brown eyes flashed at him. “Of course I am! I don't know about you, but the idea of just up and leaving my home and my family doesn't sit well in my stomach,” Ethan argued, his shoulders squaring with annoyance.
The air crackled with tension; Jaiden could feel it in his senses, in the way his ability tightened and groaned. “I didn't say it was easy,” Jaiden replied, with more patience than he knew himself capable. “But it is necessary.”
“Well, it's not happening,” Ethan said, shaking his head. “If I'm so valuable--” This he said with a sarcastic drawl that made Jaiden twitch, “then the rest of your little organization can stay here, too.”
Jaiden exhaled sharply, trying to calm himself. “It doesn't work like that.”
“That's not my problem, it's yours,” Ethan retorted, and by the gods, he was stubborn! Probably the most stubborn Kinetic Jaiden had ever met, and that included Charlotte. “I can take of myself.”
“Yes, you've done a stunning job of it so far,” Jaiden drawled, with a pointed look at Ethan's bandaged arm and the scratches on his face.
The reddening of Ethan's cheeks seemed incongruent to his age. He looked away from Jaiden, crossing his arms. “Yeah, you protected me. Rub it in a little more,” he huffed.
Jaiden worked his jaw, trying not to sound condescending and figuring he'd pretty much failed in that regard. “Do you find it that hard to believe that I want you safe?”
“No. I'm a valuable commodity after all,” Ethan replied shortly.
“I didn't mean for Ektos, Ethan.”
A flurry of expressions crossed Ethan's face, making Jaiden wish he were an Empath. But then, even if he were, it wouldn't serve him any good right now. Just like Ethan's ability wasn't helping him understand what Jaiden truly meant.
Ethan sighed, and his arms dropped from his chest, fatigue making him seem that much more older. “You don't play fair,” he muttered, but Jaiden could see the response for what it was, a temporary concession if anything. “I'll think about it.”
Which was all Jaiden could ask.
