With November 30th right around the corner and my muses refusing to cooperate, now's as good a time as any to validate my word count and mark myself a NaNo winner.

Huzzah!

Final Word Count: 66381, which includes my work on Shady Hill, In Darkness Dwells, two Fridays worth of Flash Fiction, and a drabble called Iridescent. Want to confirm my word count? Feel free to visit my NaNo Author page.

Phew. That was some hard work. Especially considering all of the setbacks in the form of my laptop.

And now I have an excerpt from Shady Hill as a little teasing tidbit for all my loyal readers. This bit here is from chapter four and it is a flashback. Also, it's seen not a single editing eye so expect mistakes. Nothing to worry about but some mild language.

“He was talking about Jeremiah again?”

Jasper nodded, eyes darting between Sophia and Sander, who were exchanging knowing glances and looks of exhaustion. He felt just a little left out of the loop, standing in the doorway of the main room as the two higher-ups discussed something between them. Sure he’d only been Rhapsody’s Repel for a few months, but he’d been with Rhapsody for much, much longer. He was trustworthy, wasn’t he?

Sophia sighed, folding up her newspaper and rubbing the bridge of her nose. “I’ll keep an eye out.”

Jasper frowned, confused. What did one have to do with the other? “What do you mean?”

Tapping the ash from his cigarette, Sander’s mouth curved into a grin, though his eyes were dark and unreadable behind his glasses. Jasper still wasn’t sure how to act around Sander, even after the blond had been with them for three years. “Guess it’s time for the kid to be inducted.”

“I’m not a kid!” Jasper retorted with a firm scowl.

In the same moment, Sophia straightened, shooting Sander a hard glare. “Alesander!”

Sander shrugged, looking nonplussed by Sophia’s reprimanding look and tone. “You’ve got the meeting with Fantasia tomorrow, right?” he asked, bringing his cigarette back to his lips. “Someone has to watch Mik’s back.”

“You do it!”

“With my ‘minor’ power?”

Sophia sat back in her seat, a sound of aggravation leaving her lips. “Cole’s too young,” she argued like Jasper wasn’t standing there, listening to the two of them debate this.

“Hello!” Jasper said, waving a hand in the air, his face burning with embarrassment. He was eighteen, damn it! He wasn’t a kid. “I’m standing right here.”

They ignored him.

Sander stared at Sophia, just as stubborn as she, lifting his cigarette from his lips. “Either the kid goes or we twiddle our thumbs and wait. He’s got to find out sooner or later.”

Rubbing her hand across her forehead, Sophia chewed on her bottom lip. “Do you think he can handle it?”

“He’ll have to,” Sander said, and finally looked at Jasper, including him in the conversation. “Think you have what it takes to look after the boss, kid?”

“I’m not a kid,” Jasper repeated stubbornly, twisting his jaw. “And isn’t that what I’ve been doing for the past three months?"

Sander snorted, sitting forward in his chair, tipping his ashes into a nearby ashtray. “Blocking a few fireballs and water spouts is easy compared to this.”

“I can handle it,” Jasper said, lifting his chin. He might be younger than anyone else, but he’d worked hard to be accepted as Rhapsody’s repel. He wasn’t going to let Mik down now.

“See?” Sander said, gesturing to Sander. “The kid says he can handle it.”

Rolling her eyes, Sophia rose to her feet, abandoning her newspaper on the table. “Cole doesn’t know what this entails. I’ll leave that explanation to you, since you seem to think you know what you’re doing,” she said, and stepped away from the table, her heels clicking sharply across the wood floor.

“Such a drama queen,” Sander muttered and stood, crushing out his cigarette. “Okay, kid. Let me explain,” he said, throwing an arm over Jasper’s shoulder and leading him out of the common room. “It’s pretty simple really. Just follow the boss, make sure no one kills him, and then drag him back home when he’s done.”

“Done?” Jasper repeated with a frown. “Doing what?”

Sander scratched at his jaw, for the first time hesitating. “That kind of thing is better seen than explained, I think. Your virgin eyes will probably be horrified but there’s nothing to be done for that I suppose.”

Jasper’s forehead crinkled. Sander wasn’t making much sense, but then, the fire alter had a bad habit of joking too much about things.

“I don’t get it.”

“You will,” Sander said, something in his tone sobering, no longer teasing. “Trust me, Cole. You will.”

Now, with NaNoWriMo out of the way, I can start on my December to-do list. This is what I'm hoping to cross off the list in December, along with all the holiday madness.
  1. Finish draft two of In Darkness Dwells wherein I edit the first draft, add new scenes, and ship it off to the people who've volunteered to give it a critical eye.
  2. Finish draft one of Whispers of Yesterday which has been languishing in a near complete state for about four months. There are only three or four chapters left to write.
  3. Complete The Beautiful Lie (fans rejoice!) -- there are about ten to twelve chapters left in this, I would say
  4. Complete Playing with Fire, a Bleach fanfiction that hasn't made it's debut yet that was a birthday fic promised to a reader. Yikes. In this regard, I also need to finish the Bleach oneshot request for the winner of the 40K hit on Pandora's Box
  5. Complete draft one of Shady Hill. I'm on chapter seven now, a bit stalled thanks to departing muses, and there are probably about ten more chapters left in it.
  6. Finalize Aftermath and start composing the synopses and cover letters necessary to start querying. I hope to have at least three queries out for it by the time the New Year rolls around.
I think these are pretty reasonable goals. With any luck, I'll manage to complete them all.

Also, in other news... my laptop has returned! With a brand new hard drive and everything. All that's missing now is my data, which my computer tech is struggling to recover from my busted hard drive. As a result, he has my external hard drive that has my backup data on it so I'm SOL until he's done. Very, very frustrating. But at least my baby has been returned to me. It's only been a month. I was going into withdrawals, seriously. *laughs*

So that's an update. I hope you enjoyed the excerpt. Thanks for reading!
