Shelter - a lovely coming-of-age, slice-of-life movie that just happens to have a gay couple in it. That's what I love so much about it. As one reviewer points out: "I enjoy how the protagonists issues stem mainly from outside conflicts, rather than the fact that he has discovered himself to be homosexual and falling in love with his best friend's brother."

There are other reasons this movie isn't to be missed. For a low budget film, the acting and cinematography are great! The backdrop of Los Angeles is actually rather lovely. And there's a great artistic theme to the whole film. The main character is a striving artist, burdened by a responsibility to help his family, and torn between what he wants to do and what he feels he should do. He's also quite adorable. *grins*

What I also love about this movie: the soundtrack, which features a lot of original music by Shane Mack. It's got a soft, lyrical quality to it. Very simple but lovely. See this -->video<-- for an audio sample. This video, consequently, is also my favorite song in the film. Also, video has wonderful scenes from the movie to give you an idea of what it's like. Probably not a good idea to watch at work.

Shelter is also the winner of a couple awards for how amazing it is. I don't think you'll be disappointed if you check it out. Also, it features one of the more emotionally charged scenes I've seen in a LGBT-themed movie. The actors have such chemistry on screen. You can practically feel it buzzing between them.

It's on Netflix, for all you savvy watchers out there, and I'd recommend giving it a watch or two. You won't be disappointed.
